We never imagined we would be in a situation where we are devising - TopicsExpress

We never imagined we would be in a situation where we are devising an English curriculum for over 280 students, placing them in levels and organizing a schedule of classes and teachers - in a foreign country to us, miles and oceans away from home. We are 20 American college students who are spending three weeks teaching over 280 displaced Syrian refugee students in an 8-classroom school in Gaziantep, Turkey. The experience is beyond exhilirating, exciting, and inspirational for us. However, the experiences and conditions of the students we are teaching is also beyond sobering. Our students have experienced hardships, sorrows and violence that no child should experience. Many recount harrowing journeys escaping Syria to come to Turkey. Here in Gaziantep, 60 km away from the border, many are leading seemingly hopeless lives, resigned to the obstacles of being guests in a country. Families are struggling in the streets. For the majority, it is nearly impossible to get into a Turkish university. Also many have not been in school for years. The psychosocial trauma some face haunts their innocent, eager faces. They are bright students, excited to learn, with many dreams theyd like to accomplish. We want to reach out to you in order to raise money to provide them with school supplies to continue their education, with scholarships hopefully to cover any college prep or partial college expenses they might have, to provide them resources and hope, and importantly, to provide support to their families and homes. One thing we also want to do is to raise money to provide Ramadan food baskets to impoverished families in the city. For only $80, you can provide food for an entire family for the entire holy month of fasting (Ramadan). any amount will help! Please and thank you youcaring/mission-trip-fundraiser/inspiring-syrian-youth/194354
