We received some mixed views on the OA Wednesday poll about a high school student refusing to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance. The question: A student at a high school in a small town near Houston reportedly received a two-day, in-school suspension recently for refusing to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. The student said his refusal occurred because of his dislike of the government spying on citizens. What do you think of this situation? The student has a right to not participate in the Pledge of Allegiance. Its a right anyone should enjoy for various reasons - political, religious or personal. 45 votes I support the decision to suspend the student. He was wrong to refuse to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance and should show more respect. 28 votes I think you have to respect the rights of the student along with the school districts policies and practices. That said, havent the courts already ruled on these issues? 26 votes
