We should be inspiring people to persevere in spite of their challenges, not encouraging them to give up to avoid them. To want to end it on your own terms is understandable, but lets not glorify it or romanticize it...it is not an inspiring hero story. I personally disagree with the Oregon assisted suicide Law but I can understand how many would see it as compassionate, particularly if they have watched a loved one suffer. But the truly inspiring people are the ones that suffer the same challenges and keep going, like my nephew Troy, who has suffered terribly for many years and now desperately needs a double lung transplant. It is Troy and others like him that help us find the faith, hope, strength and determination we will need to face our own challenges throughout our lives. Why should we encourage them to give up and deprive so many of the strengths of the human spirit?
