We stumbled upon the North Dakota Capitol Saturday evening while - TopicsExpress

We stumbled upon the North Dakota Capitol Saturday evening while we were out and about looking for Dinas North Dakota beer. We were hoping to get a shot of the capitol with the super moon, but it kept going behind some clouds. Sunday morning dawned bright and clear. Thanks to the kind woman at the Visitors Center /start point we were able to pick up the map shed left outside for us the day before and get an early start. Weve already shared about meeting the I Heart Radio announcer on the route... The course took us along the Tom OLeary Golf Course Recreational Trail. At the Capitol we were fortunate to find someone to take our photo on a Sunday morning. The Pioneer Family Monument is located in front of the capitol. In front of the ND Heritage Museum we found an impressive iron buffalo. Dina and I went to Sacajawea Junior High, so we were interested in the statue of Sakakawea. A plaque with it shared what little is known about her. She was only about 16 when she and her husband joined the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Her husband was hired as a guide, but it was Sacajawea who helped most. She knew the landscape and acted as an interpreter. Because the group of men were traveling with a woman with a child, the Indians they met along the way were more inclined to believe they were peaceful. It is believed that she died just a few years later in 1812. Wed heard a lot about the 19-story no-frills skyscraper capitol, how the state had built it for just two million dollars during the Depression. We understand that on a clear day you can see 30-35 miles from the 18th story observation deck. Unfortunately the capitol didnt open until 1pm so we werent able to go inside. We found a geocache as we left the capitol grounds and finished the walk as quickly as we could so that we could be on our way to our second walk of the day in Pierre, South Dakota.
