We were kids, about 11 of us close in the neighborhood.Wed ride bikes, prank each other, make boundaries, watch each others back, swim in the creek, share comic books, explore, play in the woods. When my dads vehicle struck a car that was in the road with no lights and broken down and no one else was home, my sister and I were worried and went to the Whitakers up on the corner. David and Kelly were brothers we played with, and the Whitakers gladly woke up and took us in while events were later to unfold concerning that wreck. I liked David and Kelly. Intelligent youngsters. Then high school came, then the draft notices, and the country took the oldest Whitaker. He was the first I knew to fall victim. More came after him, a drummer from Oakhaven mia., Michael was his name. Though I disagreed with the politic of this government, I am not a pacifist. I believe if you fight a war, then damn the torpedoes, fight it to win, not to maintain a war that finances the interest of a few. Irregardless of my political view, the common soldier, each with his pack of burdens and dedication and reasons, that soldier I support and thank graciously, for despite it all, and despite the political and theological positioning, reality is. that mankind has never gotten along well, and without soldiers, our way of life would suffer its destruction. One day, we will leave behind the instruments of music, the mobility of technology, and all this life we know now will be past. I wont forget the service to our country these that serve have offered that I may enjoy my time here now, tears and smiles. Thanks to our military.
