Wednesday August 27, 2014 Strength For The Journey 1 Kings 19:3-8 (NIV) Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, while he himself went a days journey into the desert. He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. I have had enough, LORD, he said. Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors. Then he lay down under the tree and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, Get up and eat. He looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. The angel of the LORD came back a second time and touched him and said, Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you. So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. God has called each of us His children to specific life journeys, and He knows exactly how long those journeys are and what we would need for the journey. Elijah experienced the depths of fatigue and discouragement just after his two great spiritual victories: the defeat of the prophets of Baal and the answered prayer for rain (1 Kings 18). Often discouragement sets in after great spiritual experiences, especially those requiring physical effort or involving great emotion. To lead him out of depression, God first let Elijah rest and eat. God is not unconcerned about our physical needs. He understands when we are tired and feel like we cannot go on. He knows when we are overwhelmed and feel like giving up. At those times, He is there to provide us with the comfort, encouragement and strength we need to continue. He will never leave us to our weaknesses. Just as He knew how much strength Elijah needed for the forty days journey, He knows what we need for the journey He has called us to. When we feel let down after a great spiritual experience, we should remember that Gods purpose for our lives is not yet over. He will always give us strength for the journey. Amen. Be Blessed.
