Welcome back to a bashing Weaponry Wednesday! Dont worry, youll understand the pun in a second, as well be talking about shields! Odd ones, to boot. And yes, I am talking plural. I have two posts for you today to make sure you get your fair share! :) So lets get started. First, we have the so called Lantern Shield. It truly is more of a gauntlet, but pimped out, if you excuse my description. You have a buckler with about a foot in diameter attached to it, and several spikes and serrated blades to make the fight way more difficult for the opponent. The eponymous lantern (at least in this remnant in Vienna), sits in the top portion with an opening to the outside and was believed to be used to blind foes at night or to be helpful in a fight at dawn. However, given that its complex and ornamental design is a bit cumbersome for real battles, a more likely theory is that it was used by guards in (predominantly Italian cities) to walk around in otherwise dangerous cities. It definitely looks like it could handle ruffians and robbers easily. What do you think of this interesting medieval gadget?
