Well I am seriously non-plussed. I just got off the phone to my GP about these hot flushes. My testosterone levels came back low. Despite that, his intention seemed to be to tell me that its not fatal, advise me to come off the methadone and leave it there. I got the distinct impression he wasnt even going to mention hormone treatment before I did, and then he just said we cant get any (testosterone, that is). I had to drag an explanation out of him. He said he has a couple of other patients who have been unable to find a pharmacy to supply it anywhere, and I am to call back in 6-8 weeks. I bet he thinks then summer will be over and the problem will go away. I can tell you it wont. It may ease off a little, but I get hot flushes that drench me to the skin when its freezing cold. I cant help but think he doesnt quite get how bad it is. Some days I get ready to go out and by the time Ive got dressed and got my stuff together I am drenched in sweat. Naturally, I change my clothes, but thats not always enough and then I end up soaking a second set of clothes before Ive even left the house. This can still happen when its bitterly cold outside. If I cook a meal in our kitchen I usually end up soaked too. On a hot day I have to cook in my boxer shorts. Its the same if I try to do any housework or odd-jobs around the house. When Im at the peak of a flush my face pours water so that if I wipe it with a towel its wet again by the time the towel has crossed my face. I can actually feel it flowing out of my pores. It beads up on my eyelashes and flows into my eyes, stinging them as I try to cope with the waves of nausea and exhaustion. All this going on about sweating distracts from the other issue of how exhausted, run down and miserable I feel all the time. The doctor asked me if I still went to the gym, and I said no I only go swimming because of the hot flushes. He looked skeptical, like he thought I was being silly worrying about being sweaty in a gym full of sweaty people. Not so, I would stand out even in the gym. Most people in the gym look a bit hot and damp, not like theyve just crawled out of the river. This is beyond a joke, there must be something I can do. Its really getting me down.
