Well! We had another fantastically fun meeting on Friday - I cant believe how late we stayed up till (and how much grape juice was drunk!) Thanks again for your delightful company - Im so thrilled at the way we all offer differing opinions and tastes, yet still gel so well together as a group. First up - The Virgin Suicides. I got the strong impression that it wasnt universally liked (sorry Jolanta!) I think the main issues people found with this novel was its slow pace, detachment from the main characters, and also perceived objectification of the five girls. Im included in the group who didnt enjoy this novel, so please, feel free to speak in its defence if you so wish! We decided that watching the film version would be too depressing, so we stuck Lost in Austen on instead (much more light-hearted, and still in keeping with the literary theme!!) Finally - we also discussed The Yellow Wallpaper (a short story). We had strong opinions on this text - verging from actively hating it to feeling passionately about its subtext and historical importance. I, for one, had never heard of Perkins Gilman before, so (being one of the people who loved TYW!), am really appreciative of having been introduced to her writing via the book club. Hannah, Justine and Jennifer - Im not sure if you read both books, but if you did, wed love to hear what you thought of them! Once again, thanks so all for coming (and to Lucy for the home made truffles!) Cant wait for next month! x
