Well, it finally happened, even though I wasnt sure it ever would. My 12yo reluctant reader has fallen in love with books! Every time I cant seem to find her now shes hidden away reading just one more chapter. Learning to read didnt come easy for her, but I never stopped expecting her to practice reading aloud. I corrected her mistakes when she made them and had her keep moving forward. (Soapbox: a tree is very different from the tree. [See To Kill a Mockingbird if you dont believe me.] I dont believe in letting little mistakes like this go uncorrected.) We kept going to the library regularly, where I expected her to check out books that looked interesting to her. There are LOTS of books on lots of bookshelves all around the house. The rest of the family loves to read and to talk about the books we are reading. AND IT FINALLY CAUGHT ON. Just these last 2 weeks, I have seen a brand new, visible delight in finally finding the joy in reading! All this to say, PARENTS, DONT GIVE UP! Keep expecting your children to practice reading EVEN IF IT IS HARD. Keep encouraging them to read EVEN WHEN THEY DONT WANT TO. The love of reading is contagious. Sometimes it just takes time to catch on.
