Well, it would have been two weeks ago today that I died...as a complication of open heart surgery for the repair of my faulty mitral valve. But by the Grace and Will of God I was allowed for some purpose to live for a while longer. I need to thank all my family, friends and other people, some of whom I dont even know, for their support, presence and prayers. I need to thank the members of my church and many other churches for the same. It is impossible for me to mention all who helped me through this trying time but I must name some: My wife, Sherry, who took care of me to the point of physical exhaustion and even sickness; each and every one of my children, Philip, Alysia, Danielle, and Candi, who contributed in their own way: my brother Bill and his wife, Cynthia, who drove 250 miles in the middle of the night, to be with me on that critical day: my friends, Steve and Marsha, who came in just to be there; my Aunts and Uncle; my friend Lee, who, working at the hospital, kept constant vigilance on my care; Leon, George and Pastor Kevin from my church; Russ, my closest friend, Pam, Colleen, Susan, Jane, David, Gary, Joan, Beth, Rick, Ron, Hoyt and Connie, and all the others who supported me, including Sharon. I also want to thank the greatest Cardiac Surgery team God ever assembled, led by Dr. James Davies, who performed open chest surgery on me, not once but twice in one day, saving my life each time. Among the team members, I want to thank every UAB Hospital employee who was involved in my care, especially the nursing personnel. Lastly, though I know there were others at my bedside when I arrested, I am driven to forever thank my post-op Cardiovascular ICU nurse, Nate. As I found out later, It was Nate, when I said I was going to pass out and did, who responded...it was Nate who diagnosed that I was in a lethal heart rhythm. It was Nate who performed CPR on me, and it was Nate, who shocked me back to life. I am forever in his debt. Today I am much improved...on my way to recovery. What a blessing!
