Were in general agreement with most of this but have a slightly different way of characterizing it. We remind athletes that jumping consists of multiple phases including vertical propulsion, flight, and landing. Since the vertical propulsion phase in jumping and weightlifting have been studied and measured to be nearly identical, we regularly encourage our athletes to jump to create vertical propulsion. But we also discourage them from flight by teaching a properly-timed change of direction. Though weve been back and forth over the years on whether to cue using the word jump, we find its still one of the most effective ways for us to get our athletes to drive properly with their legs (an action that is often lacking or misunderstood when they first arrive to us).
