Were only two weeks closer to Christmas, and to pass the time, Im finally gonna bring out the Top 12 Favorite Christmas Movies. Why Top 12? Because its Christmas! You know, the 12 Days of Christmas. Apologies for keeping you waiting, but Ive spent a lot of time watching several movies and debating over which I should pick. Hope my choices are acceptable and have the word Christmas in them. 12 - National Lampoons Christmas Vacation (1989) First up is the third installment of an already classic comedy series called National Lampoons Vacation. Written by John Hughes and starring Chevy Chase reprising his role from the previous two movies, we see the Griswold family staying home for Christmas for the first time, trying to plan a perfect Christmas, but even when staying at home, nothing goes right and the idea of a perfect Christmas may head for disaster. Filled with hilarious gags, laugh-out-loud humor and moments of heart, Christmas Vacation is the perfect Christmas movie to bring out a laugh from us. 11 - Gremlins (1984) You may be wondering, But Gremlins is a horror-comedy, Christmas wasnt its main focus. Well, since the film takes place around Christmas and many Christmas elements are mentioned a couple of times throughout the film, its safe to count this as a Christmas movie. The story follows a boy who receives a strange creature called a mogwai as a pet for Christmas. However, by inadvertently breaking three rules, the creature then spawns other creatures who transform into small, destructive, evil monsters, which terrorize a small town. Some people may be put off by the dark humor and the horror featured in this Christmas movie, but for me, I really like this film. I think its fun, creative, and I think the Christmas setting works well. 10 - The Santa Clause (1994) A Disney Christmas movie released on the year of my birth? Thats sure to make me watch it. No matter how old you get, this movie really recaptures the wonder you felt about Santa Claus when you were young. A ordinary man, played by comedian Tim Allen, accidentally knocks Santa off of the roof on Christmas Eve, and soon learns that he is destined to become the new Santa Claus. Allen thinks its nonsense, but over the next year, strange things begin to happen to him, and he soon realizes he has to become the new Santa or Christmas is no more. This is a wonderful movie to see during Christmas, and I may watch it again soon. 9 - The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) You all know Charles Dickens classic Christmas novel, and it has since been made into many film adaptions. In 1992, it was the Muppets turn to bring this story to life, and they did a fabulous job at it. Although it plays like a typical Muppet movie, featuring songs and hilarious comedy, this adaption follows the story more closely. Also, this is the first Muppet movie to not focus on the Muppets, but focuses on a human character, specifically Ebeneezer Scrooge, who is played by Oscar-winning British actor Michael Caine. This is just another passionate role Caine really gets into, and hes wonderful as always. For those of you that love the Muppets, then this is the perfect Christmas Carol adaption for you. 8 - The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) Often considered one of the best stop-motion movies of all time, Tim Burtons The Nightmare Before Christmas takes place in a fantasy world called Halloween Town, filled with citizens such as deformed monsters, ghosts, ghouls, goblins, vampires, werewolves and witches. Jack Skellington, tired of the same Halloween routine year after year, discovers another world called Christmas Town, and decides that he and Halloween Towns citizens should celebrate it this year, which leads to disastrous consequences. This film is completely original, even though it was based on a poem, its completely original, and the premise is all-out outstanding. The story, the characters, everything is awesome, like Lego Movie-awesome. It remains a Disney classic, and will continue to be so in my opinion. 7 - Jingle All the Way (1996) Legendary action star Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in his only family comedy here. He plays a father who is on a last-minute search for a doll his son wants for Christmas, but faces numerous comedic misfortunes and escapades while trying to find the doll. I know many people dont like this movie because it focuses on commercialism than Christmas, but thats part of the fun. In my opinion, this is one of the most funniest Christmas movies Ive ever seen. I liked its depiction of last-minute Christmas shopping, and I also liked seeing Schwarzenegger try and act all light and gentle while still throwing in his one-liners as well. For me, Id say Jingle All the Way is the perfect movie to watch with your kids. 6 - Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992) Some people say this is just a rehash of the classic first movie, just doing the same thing, same gags over again. To them I say, I believe you, but my Tommy gun dont! That means I dont believe this movies a rehash, not one bit. In fact, I think this movies such a great sequel that nearly tops the original, with a new premise and funnier jokes. Once again, Kevin is left alone, but this time, in New York City, and he begins to turn the Big Apple into his own playground, until his old enemies from the first film return, plotting a huge holiday heist. Kevin is ready to fight back against them with another battery of booby traps his enemies will never forget. Its a great sequel movie, plain and simple. Next one. 5 - The Polar Express (2004) In my opinion, this is just one of those few films where Im really feeling the magic of Christmas. In this marvelous story, set on Christmas Eve, a young boy boards on a magical train on an incredible journey to the North Pole. Written and directed by Robert Zemeckis, the director of Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Forrest Gump, and Cast Away, the film is the first ever animated motion-capture film. The film also features Tom Hanks, in his third film with Zemeckis, playing five roles in the film. My goodness. Five motion-captured roles? Thats the sign of a great actor. What are the roles Hanks played? Well, firstly, he does the motion-capture movements and facial expressions of the main character, the boy (not the voice, though). Secondly, Hanks plays the boys father. Third, he plays the Conductor, which is the only role you may recognize Hanks by. Fourth, he plays the mysterious hobo, and finally, Hanks plays Santa Claus himself. Surprised at what roles Hanks played in the film? Well, I was. Overall, The Polar Express is a truly magical Christmas movie. Hope youre planning to watch this movie, because its now 10 years since this movie first came out. 4 - Disneys A Christmas Carol (2009) Robert Zemeckis has been bit by the motion-capture bug again. This time, he has made his own adaption of the Charles Dickens story, and in my opinion, I think this is the adaption that perfectly captures the story perfectly. All of the actors are perfectly cast and well-acted in the film. Jim Carrey is wonderful as both Ebeneezer Scrooge and the three ghosts, and Gary Oldman is also wonderful as Bob Cratchit and Jacob Marley. This is another one of those Christmas movies where every element is truly magical, and it remains one of Disneys finest. 3 - Home Alone (1990) Every young kids dream is for no parents, and there are some wonderful films that presents that dream in a wonderful way, but nowhere is that presented more wonderfully than in this John Hughes-written Christmas comedy. When the McCallister family left on their Christmas vacation, they forgot one small detail: their eight-year-old son Kevin. But dont worry. Hes doing okay. He has his own fun around the house, he gets ready to celebrate the holidays, and most importantly, he protects the house from a duo of bumbling burglars trying to break in. With a heartfelt story combined with the most hilarious comedy featured in a movie, Home Alone remains a personal Christmas favorite. 2 - Elf (2003) Many people thought it would be ridiculous to have Will Ferrell, the comedian who made us laugh on Saturday Night Live and went streaking in the film Old School, play a human who was raised by Santas elves and mainly acts like a child. Thankfully, all the people were 100% wrong. Ferrell really gets into the role, and really captures the passion of an innocent human who loves Christmas and cares about pretty much everybody. When he discovers hes a human, he journeys to New York City to meet his father, spreading Christmas cheer into New York in the process, but not without causing various comedic incidents and accidents as well. With the perfect combination of heart and humor, Elf has got all the markings of a true Christmas movie. 1 - How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) Every Who down in Whoville liked Christmas a lot, but the Grinch, who lived just north of Whoville, did not. Those are the first words of the classic Dr. Seuss book, which was adapted to wonderful perfection by acclaimed director Ron Howard. In my opinion, this movie combines heartfelt emotion with one of the most hilarious one-liners and visual sight gags very well. The moral of the story is one of the most wonderful morals ever heard in a story, and in my opinion, really shows us what Christmas is really about. On top of that, Jim Carrey, my favorite actor, plays the Grinch, and this is easily one of his best ever roles. A wonderful story combined with many bits of heart and humor makes The Grinch my favorite ever Christmas movie. Do you agree with this Top 12 list? Whats your favorite Christmas movie? Post a comment if you want to answer, and I hope you enjoyed reading this gift of mine to you, my friends. Hope you have a merry Christmas, my friends.
