West Nile Virus has recently been detected in Lake county. This is earlier in the year than usual. Be sure to have your horses vaccinated and dump any buckets or other containers that are holding water and allowing mosquitoes to breed. Fish in water troughs (goldfish or mosquito fish) will eat larvae. West Nile is a virus transmitted from wild birds to horses, people or a variety of other animals (including alligators!) via mosquito bites. People or horses infected with West Nile Virus can have flu-like symptoms, neurologic symptoms or be completely asymptomatic. Approximately 35% of horses that show symptoms will die from it.
