What I, and other sufferers of depression, want you to know. Im not feeling sorry for myself, just looking for acceptance. Depression is not a choice. Its a complex medical disorder. It often feels like theres a dark cloud following me around, and I cant make it stop. I take medication to balance the chemicals in my brain, not for fun. Its not just a phase, but it doesnt last forever either. (We hope) Being depressed doesnt mean Im suicidal, dangerous or a drug addict. Im not trying to hurt you. Just because Im depressed doesnt mean Im depressing. Im trying my hardest. I dont want to feel ashamed for my depression. Depression doesnt define me. Im a real person with real values. Im not broken just because Im depressed. I want to talk to you about my depression like you talk to me about your flu. Stop using my mental disorder against me, as if I chose to be this way.
