What a beautiful day for a birthday! Were excited to celebrate AmeriCorps’ 20th birthday today as our new South Louisiana Red Cross members gathered with staff, volunteers and board members for the pledge ceremony at our Northshore office. The event kicks off a year of service for some 75,000 AmeriCorps members serving coast to coast. Presidents Obama and Bill Clinton administered the AmeriCorps pledge from the White House via live stream. President George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush joined the celebration in marking the 20th anniversary of the AmeriCorps national service program by video. Since 1994, more than 900,000 men and women have served in AmeriCorps, providing more than 1.2 billion hours of service addressing critical challenges from poverty and hunger to disasters and the dropout crisis. AmeriCorps members have earned more than $2.7 billion in education scholarships to pay for college or pay back student loans. The pledge event highlighted the impact of AmeriCorps on our communities and showcased how AmeriCorps has grown through innovative partnerships that meet needs and expand opportunity for those who serve.
