What a good Rhythm section(I.e- the double bass, keyboard and drums) does, is to provide a bulwark around which the soloist weaves his craft. In jazz, ,the soloist is allowed huge freedom to improvise. He therefore does not stick exactly to the script but plays around it using his skill, talent and the solid constant theme provided by the Rhythm section to remain true to the tune. Terry Gibbs (backed by his big band ) now illustrates the point by playing a fantastic vibraphone solo in his rendition of a beautiful ballad written by Norman Tiny Kahn ,- You go to my head Enjoy!
