What an amazing weekend fishing. All started with the red eye - TopicsExpress

What an amazing weekend fishing. All started with the red eye mission from the Gold Coast up to Hervey bay on Friday night. Leaving the marina at 4am the next morning ( after 3.5hrs sleep) we made the journey across the bay. Lures were deployed at 6.30 and trolling began towards Rooney’s. First Bite came at 8.30am with a healthy fish, to Karen, of around 15kg caught on a home made lure made of a beer cap and wine cork. It became red hot at around 9.30am with another healthy fish. Next pass missed strike. Then again next pass of the spot we hook our third for the day. Whilst mid fight the skipper calls a free jumper 15m away (with a lure in its mouth), only to find the boat in front (Ramjet) hooked up. We both tag our fish around the same time. Whilst deploying lures again, skipper sees a marlin swim under boat and we hook up again, although this time, the fish does not jump, but comes straight to the boat. This was the fish that ramjet just tagged, and now we have tagged our fourth, but bust him off before we can get the old tag data. 5-4-4 before 9.30. We then hook a feisty fish that took a few hundred meters of line, dancing across the water, giving a great aerial show. Very unlucky as he lands on the line and pulls the hooks after a few minutes. It goes down hill from there, with the dead lunch-time bite, missing the next few in as many hours. We then get a hookup at around 1.30pm, quickly turning into a double as I wind in the rigger. Unfortunately his bill gets tangled in the teaser whilst going vertical and pulling hooks leaving us tagging one of the two fish. We plot along for the next couple of hours, confident we would get another shot. Sure enough we do, and drop him. Set up anchor for the night, finishing the day 10-7-5. To top off the day we had an array of life in the water lights, getting a close and personal look of a few sea snakes and flying fish (caught in the scoop net). Day 2 kicks off with a BANG! I spot a few fins and look at Pete, who has also seen them. Three billfish sunbaking. A quick circle around them we have a pair come up for a lazy couple of bites. Karen then tags her first for the day at around 7.30. We then tag a double not too long after, with Karen doing a great job on the deck by herself. About an hour later another double hookup, tagging one of the two. Lure back in, and another tag about 10 minutes later. Finished the day with a bonus 6th tag at 11.30am before lines up for the trip back to Hervey bay. Total for the morning 9-7-6. Total stats for the trip: 19-13-11 black marlin, 2 Spanish Macs and a solid Longtail Tuna. What a fantastic way to spend the weekend, with great people and a great back drop. Will definitely be back soon.
