What an emotional meeting last night at the Greater Victoria School Board Meeting when 30 speakers shared their emotional pleas to the Board to keep the school open. SD61 is set to save $316,182. by closing the school and Trustees McEvoy, Orcherton, Horsman, Leonard and Ferris voted in favour. Very emotional but articulate students from K to Grade 5 told us that it would be devastating for them to move from a small school to a larger school. One student said that it was like being stabbed when she heard that it could be closed; another said that she would be heart broken; another said that we would be taking everything from her that meant anything to her; another said that he came out as transgender and was readily accepted by his friends and is afraid of what would happen to him in a bigger school. This translates to the board saving $5,000. per student however, I wonder if that will be the saving as the needs of these students may be compounded in a larger school. To me, the lives of each of these students are worth more than $5K and we could have found the $300K elsewhere.
