What an unbelievable day at work...listen up Speech Therapists, I am now a full on believer of NMES, estim, vitalstim or whatever it is you use. My patient hasnt been able to swallow for 10 months, literally nothing. Not able to initiate a swallow at all, not even her spit. Has been carrying around a cup to spit in and tissues for months. She had intensive swallow therapy for 6 months which ended last December and was told she could never eat again. She became my patient 4 days ago and after 4 treatments of NMES she swallowed 5 single ice chips today and burst into tears which caused me to cry also. This is why we do what we do...try absolutely everything. I have always used NMES and have seen some amazing results, but not to this effect. Will keep you posted as we are planning a MBS in 10 days. As always I pray for all my patients so keep this woman in your prayers as we continue on this journey.
