What are some of the less-obvious possible signs of depression in children and adolescents? (other than noticeable sadness, crying, etc.) What you can see: Loss of interest in activities that they used to really like, withdrawing from friends and/or family, sleeping all the time (or not sleeping at all), and/or drastically fluctuating moods. What you cant see: Thoughts of self-harm/suicide, some self-harming behaviors (as children and teenagers can often hide this), and feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or shame. What can you do? Notice your child. Notice that they look like they are down today or that they arent hanging around with their friends anymore. Notice that they seem to be saying negative comments about themselves. Wonder how they are feeling. Wonder about their thoughts. And if you notice these things and they are not opening up to you, ask for help. Youre not alone in this.
