What do you know to be true? #Jesus 1 John 5:20-21 “And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Little children, keep yourselves from idols.” So, as we come to the end of John’s letter, we read that he ends with precisely where he began—with what we know to be true, which consequently is what we must accept to be true in our lives so that we may be assured of eternity—Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Lord of our lives. As His children and His chosen bride, He “has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true.” There were many false prophets in John’s time and there are many today. We mustn’t assume that simply because we are Christians that we are immune to their lies. We still operate under fallen flesh, and inasmuch as this is true, we are still susceptible to the lies of the enemy. He will strike at our most vulnerable, and that is often in what we see as reason or reasonable. That’s exactly why these false beliefs and false doctrines appear to be harmless, even helpful, and many believers are subsequently led astray, away from the “true God and eternal life.” We must stand today, in this place that is not our home, ever centered on what we know as revealed by the Holy Spirit: Jesus is the incarnate Lord, He has given us eternal life in Him, and we know that He is coming again to take us home. Because of these things, we live today anxiously awaiting His return while securely abiding in His truth. Amen.
