What do you think about this idea: If there is a god, it is in the neurons. It is nothing at all related with what religion show us. It has no face, no long beard and no multiple arms. The creative process that fires up a sequence of neurons and create a thought from zero to existence could be, in a way, called god. That thought that was not there before is not god either. The process of thought creation it is what could be called god, nothing else. There is no physical heaven nor hell. This are just representations of our human emotions (guilt, fear, sadness, etc. for hell - Love, compassion, peace, etc. for heaven). Religions were useful in the past to ethically protect ourselves from ourselves. Now we use them to create a sense of deeper community. A community based on sharing beliefs systems and helping the ones in need. Also used to hate and discriminate in group which also creates a community feeling. Religion has its days counted and it doesnt matter if we believe it or not. Technology will know exactly how the brain works and we will realize that holding belief systems is not an efficient way to think. Logic will prevail as the most efficient way to use the brain. We will understand 100% what the sense of the divine really is through studying what happens in the brain when it reacts to the chemical compounds that produces while it is on different states = deep focus, meditative state, DMT, Serotonin, etc. The meaning of life is to live, not to survive. Now is all there is and will it ever be.
