What inspired this book? I’m often asked what inspired me to write this or that book. For When Love Gets Hairy, the character of Nino was my inspiration. You see in my many visits to P-town over the years, I’ve encountered this type of man in many of the gay men who come to the Cape. They live in the moment and are predominantly selfish. Their major concern is getting off and moving on. So I wondered what would happen to this type of man if he met someone who challenged his very way of living? What would happen if he had to move beyond his comfort zone and personal biases? I think such a conflict speaks to many of us. I know when I look back on my misspent youth, I can see how much like Nino I once was. Before I knew better, life was all about me. But as I matured, fell in love, and had children, I realized I was only a small part of the whole puzzle. Being happy didn’t mean just living for me because without those we love, life really isn’t worth living, is it? So what was your moment of personal enlightenment? When you realized that there was more to the world than the small part you played? Was it your significant other? Your child?
