Whatever Gets You Thru The Night by John Lennon, accompanied by Elton John, hit No. 1 on the charts 50 years ago today. (11/16/1974). It was the only solo No. 1 hit for Lennon in the United States. He was the last of the Beatles to have a No. 1 hit in the US. Lennon was skeptical that the song would chart and John trying to encourage him told him it would go to No. 1 and bet him if it did he would have to appear at one of his concerts. Lennon honored the bet that he lost and appeared on stage at Elton Johns Thanksgiving concert at Madison Square Garden. According to May Pang Lennon was watching Reverand Ike, a late night TV evangelist, who said, Let me tell you guys, it doesnt matter, its whatever gets you through the night. May Pang was Lennon and Yokos assistant who lived with Lennon when the couple separated during what is called the lost weekend.
