When I accepted my first job, minimum wage was $1.60 an hour and I - TopicsExpress

When I accepted my first job, minimum wage was $1.60 an hour and I had to earn every raise I received. By the time I moved out on my own, the minimum wage was $2.30 an hour ... and I had to live within a budget. Sometimes that meant not being able to go to the movies or go out for pizza. If a $13 minimum wage becomes reality, it wont be all that far away from what I make right now ... and I had to bust a$$ to get where Im at and had to give up a lot (and I dont regret a single moment) ... wonder if my payscale will go up too??? Will $13 an hour make a minimum wage employee any more motivated to work harder or become a better citizen? Nope!!! Will they have a more comfortable living? Nope!!! I truly believe a $13 an hour wage will kill jobs, raise the cost of everything. For example, today a food restaurant charges $5 for a value meal and pays its minimum wage employee $7.25 an hour. If minimum wage is raised to $13 an hour, that same fast food restaurant will have to jack its charges up or fire some employees to cover the cost of paying their help that wage. Can you imagine paying $8 or $9 for a value meal or $20 for a pizza? People are complaining about how much they have to pay for snacks at the theater ... can you imagine what a large popcorn and soda would cost??? I shudder at the thought of what the price could be. I will not support raising the minimum wage. How bout this novel idea ... get off your duff and show a good work ethic ... and earn your way up the pay scale like all others before you. We managed to survive ... and so can you. Dont expect everything to be handed to you on a silver platter.
