When I found out Michael had slipped into a coma I raced to - TopicsExpress

When I found out Michael had slipped into a coma I raced to Columbia. A few years ago I had tried to persuade my, at the time sixty-eight year young, friend to give up motorcycle track days. He would agree with me and then I would find out that a short while later he had attended another one. When Michael had his accident all I could think was that I had told him not to and how hurt and angry I was that he had put himself in that position. When I arrived at the ICU this morning Steve told me that Michael had been occasionally opening his eyes, but was without facial movements and Steve felt as though Michael was possibly gone. Steve then left me alone with Michael. With all the strength I could muster, I told Michael I had a confession, but not in a Catholic kind of way, so he could relax. I told Michael that I had wanted him not to put himself in that dangerous situation by doing track days. I knew him too well and knew he was pushing the limits like a man a third his age. Then I apologized and told him I was wrong. I told him that I had tremendous respect for him and that he had once again thought me something. He has lived his life perusing the things that he wanted, living life to the fullest and that he is a great inspiration to me. I told him that I cherished his friendship and was thankful for all the great memories. To my surprise, Michael had been responding to me by opening his eyes and attempting to speak while I was talking to him. It really hit home as I rubbed his forehead. He began to shake his head from left to right and move his right arm. I laughed and said, You dont like me rubbing your forehead. Are you getting ready to punch me? With that statement I got a slight smile. I am happy to report that as the day progressed, Michael became even more alert and bright eyed. I have no disillusions of how grave the situation is for him, but after flat-lining for 2-1/2 minutes last night and then coming back on his own, I dont believe he is ready to leave just yet. God bless you Michael and all those who care for you.
