When I post questions on my Facebook page about whether or not people think twelve-step works, I get some pretty passionate feedback. Many addicts have done twelve-step programs and found them to be failures for a wide range of reasons: • They dwell on past mistakes, not the present and future. • They emphasize religious belief even for people who are not believers. • They don’t address the emotional trauma. • There is a lot of blame and guilt. • They are rigid and have little or no room to accommodate anyone who doesn’t want to follow the “steps.”
