When I suggest pulling the plug on public schools, the most - TopicsExpress

When I suggest pulling the plug on public schools, the most frequent criticism that I hear is that poor families wont be able to afford to educate their children. Actually, right now, poor families have to bear the cost of public school taxes. If they own a home, they see it on their property tax bill. If they rent, the cost is passed along to them in their rent bill. Because they dont get vouchers, they cant afford to pay this plus private school tuition. Under the current system, only the wealthy can pay for both. The current system creates a dual track for haves and have nots. In any competitive field; real, inflation-adjusted prices fall due to competition. Think about how much you can now learn for the cost of a monthly Internet connection that you had to pay dearly for a decade ago. Public school cant compete. It needs the force of government monopoly to keep up the charade.
