When I was at Northwestern, John Bailey, ASC came and recounted a story from the making of Woody Allens Manhattan. While setting up a scene where Allens character was pacing, cinematographer Gordon Willis pointed out that Allen kept leaving the frame on one side. Thats okay, just pan the camera to keep me in the frame, was Allens reply. Gordons response to that? Ive told you what my frame is. You can stay in it, you can leave it. I dont much care. But Im not moving it. No idea if the storys true, but Ive always liked it, and an uncompromising man leaves behind a mountain of uncompromised work, from the stark lighting of The Godfather movies to the seemingly endless takes on the beauty of New York in all of his collaborations with Woody Allen. For me though, the Pakula films are the best of the bunch, and Ill have to marvel again at All the Presidents Men before the week is out. RIP Gordon Willis. Thanks for all the inspiration.
