When I was in the Air Force, I was injured while working on one - TopicsExpress

When I was in the Air Force, I was injured while working on one the cowling (metal wrapping around engine to make it aerodynamic) on my B-52. We had to work on the engine but one of the latches to lower the cowling was stuck and would not open. I had to climb a 12 foot ladder just to reach the latch. My assistant was supposed to hold a pole designed to keep the cowling from swinging down when the latch released. This latch was really jammed and it took me awhile to finally get it to release. As soon as it did, the 500+ pound engine cowling came swinging down and back towards me at the top of the ladder. My assistant had not been paying attention and did not have the pole firmly planted under the cowling. I leaned back as far as I could to try not to get hit by the cowling. The lip of the cowling caught right above my eyes and on the ridge where below my eyebrows. It picked me up into the air and tossed me backwards... the last thing I remember was landing... with the back of my head hitting the pavement first. I was knocked unconscious and the next thing I remember is waking up in the base hospital. My head was killing me. But it seemed strange that the pain I felt the most was from both of my wrists and ankles. I asked the doctor why my ankles and wrists were so sore and he said that when I got to the hospital, I had a grand mal seizure as a result of the head trauma. Unfortunately, they had some trainees there and they tried to strap my wrist and ankles down when I started the seizure. A nurse finally saw what they were doing and immediately stopped them. I was told if the nurse had not intervened that I would most likely have broken some bones from being restrained. I didnt doubt it all as they were so sore that they felt broken. Wondering why I shared this with you? Here is why. Tomorrow, I have an appointment to begin the determination process to see if I am qualified to receive a service connected disability due to this incident. I am asking that you pray for Gods will to be done and for favor to be shown if it is Gods will! Thank you! God bless you! BE BRIGHT AND SALTY!
