When Im playing contemporary {smooth jazz}, I like to have a solid funky pocket feel, which will most likely involve some hat syncopation. Whenever Im playing hat/snare syncopation, I must make sure that the flow of what Im playing: #1. stays even with the pulse of the groove. #2. Is relevant to the drum pattern that Im playing. With this genre of music, many times there is a lot going on musically {melody lines, solos, etc,}. For those reasons, I like to play the drums musically, using accents and very subtle fills to steer the composition towards the finish line. Im a huge fan of listening and understanding the song structure while playing. Knowing whats going to happen BEFORE it happens, puts me in a great position to drive the band to our final destination. Knowing & really understanding my role in the r-section is key. ~Groovemaster~ youtu.be/i9SjTwq4m9I
