When i was in library school, a highly-placed administrator told our class: It always annoys me when students tell me how much they love books. If you have time to sit around and read all day, you dont have time to be working in my library. And no, we dont have time to sit around on a reference desk reading books and waiting to offer suggestions to users. BUT I would say that all the reading Ive done has, in one way or another, been relevant to my job as a reference and History librarian. Case in point: a student mentioned that she was trying to find a dissertation topic. I was able to ask some questions and offer her suggestions based on personal reading Ive done that is related to her field of study. I think the conversation was helpful, and most of us who work in libraries have had this experience--probably again and again.
