When last I left you, I was waiting for Teresa to return from a retreat. Well, I did pick her up, and we spent a quiet day doing nothing. We went to church on Sunday and heard a decent sermon: the monsignor tied together the loaves and fishes incident with the last supper, and then, returned to parallel it to charity. Providing alms for the poor is a Middle East virtue; Mohammed called it a holy obligation. Even today, begging is not considered a disgraceful occupation in some countries. When we were in Asmara, we learned that some Eritrean families would maim their children to make them into more effective beggars, and we saw some of the results of this extreme child abuse. The week was quiet, although I did finally receive “The Folk Years” from Time-Life. It was disappointing – 1/3 folk music, 1/3 with vague connections to folk, and 1/3 recordings from the 60’s with nothing to do with folk. The “deluxe” edition included another set, “ Singers and Songwriters” – an additional 100 or so recordings, 3 of which were folk. Well, it is songs sung by singers, some of whom actually wrote the songs they were singing. Ironically, though, it was a compendium of 70’s light rock, and I had been searching for just such a collection. I also made an order for Anime on Tuesday; it came in on Thursday (my supplier is in Winchester VA). I’ve watched one of the four series I received – “Dusk Maiden of Amnesia.” It started out slow, but built into a good story. We went to Hagerstown on Saturday, to buy birthday presents for relatives and friends. Well, you should not allow me into an Izod store…. This morning, We went to church again – a different priest officiating and sermonizing. The sermon was a short one which was too long (very repetitive). The readings were those of Elijah raising the son of a widow from the dead and of Christ doing the same, and the point of the sermon was that we breath life into others with our attitudes toward them, with our humor and our kindness, and our support.. It also told us that our life is precious and we should make the most of each moment God has granted us. After church, we had hamburgers at TGIF. And that was our week…
