When politicians advocate lowering taxes, they are almost always - TopicsExpress

When politicians advocate lowering taxes, they are almost always talking about lowering taxes on someone a lot richer than you. The thing that they dont tell you is that that is going to lead to either an increase in public debt or slashing of public services. And in most cases, the majority of people (who receive little or no benefit from the tax relief) rely on those services. A STUDY published in 2009 determined that the average Canadians annual benefits from public spending (primarily in the areas of health care, education and transfer payments) came to nearly $17,000. Yes Virginia, there IS a Santa Claus, and the government can and DOES make your life better. Taxation is the price we pay for civilization. “..an astounding 80% of Canadians would have been better off if the Harper government had transferred money to local governments to pay for more and better public services instead of cutting the GST by 1%. Similarly, 75% of Canadians would have been better off if their provincial governments had invested in public health care and education instead of administering broad-based income tax cuts in the late-1990s and early-2000s. And had the federal government invested in improved federal public services instead of cutting capital gains taxation by one third in the early-2000s, 88% of Canadians would have been better off.” SOURCE: policyalternatives.ca/sites/default/files/uploads/publications/National_Office_Pubs/2009/Benefits_From_Public_Spending.pdf
