When the history of the decline and fall of the American empire is written, the root cause, of course, will be the invention and popularity of the automobile and the resultant social, economic, political and environmental dislocation and destruction that followed in its wake. But the immediate cause, with social ramifications far beyond and more profound than the car itself, will be the institution of “right-on-red.” Originally introduced as a temporary measure to save gas during the concocted “energy crisis” of the late 1970s, its accidental, unintended emergence as a right has led to a wholesale flouting of laws and rules throughout our culture, ultimately leading to the triumph of chaos over civilized order. Once red no longer means red, but becomes a shade of green (once stop means go, in other words), things fall apart. And now, discuss....
