When the light of faith tries to enter sometimes it hurts – like the first moment you emerge from a dark room into the sunlight. You squint your eyes and shade your face from the sun’s intensity. But after a moment or two, you can see that whatever the light has touched has been brightened and beautified so much more than before. Except there are people who don’t want the sun in their lives. They prefer the darkness and squalor of disbelief and oppression. They draw the shades and hide behind locked doors to get away from guidance. If the rays of light are still entering in thin and gentle streams, reminding them that there is something better, they’ll angrily board up the windows, seal every crack and cover their eyes. Anything to get away from the Truth…anything to get away from the Light. But the moment of death will uncover their eyes and they will see what their reality is – whether it is one of mercy or punishment. Those who cover their eyes now will have the veil they placed upon themselves removed... “And every soul will come, with it a driver and a witness. [It will be said], ‘You were certainly in unmindfulness of this, and We have removed from you your cover, so your sight, this Day, is sharp’” (50:21-22). What good is our eyesight here if we can’t really see? What is good is the breath in our chests if we cant really breathe? What good can possibly come of sealing ourselves in darkness?
