When we celebrate Black History Month, we remember the courageous people such as Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, or even Harriet Tubman – all who did many things for the colored people; however, we want to highlight the Pedro St. James Castle because of the significant events that took place in and around this building that made us Caymanians who we are today. “Perhaps best known as the “Birthplace of Democracy in the Cayman Islands,” Pedro St. James was the venue for a meeting on 5 December 1831 where the decision was made to form the first elected parliament. Later, on 3 May 1835, Robert Thompson, sent from the Governor of Jamaica, held court at Pedro St. James to issue the proclamation ending slavery in the British Empire.” – Pedro St. James Website History was made at Pedro St. James many years ago ending slavery in these beautiful Cayman Islands. What would Cayman be like had this not happened? Things would definitely be different. Who also was sent to proclaim the ending of ‘slavery, not just for the enslaved colored people, but the world? Over two thousand years ago, God sent his only Son down to this earth to die on the cross to end our slavery to sin. What would things be like had Jesus not died on the cross? You can end your slavery to sin this day by accepting Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. Just remember the ABC’s – Admit, Believe and Confess.
