When you work out, are you doing too much or not enough? Theres a simple way to know. Your target heart rate helps you hit the bulls eye. If your target heart rate is too high, youre straining, so slow down. If its too low, and the intensity feels light or moderate/brisk, push yourself to exercise a little harder. We dont want people to overexercise, and the other extreme is not getting enough exercise, says Gerald Flether, M.D. cardiologist in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Jacksonville, Fl. Check with your local Anytime Fitness or with the American Heart Assoc. to determine your target heart rate.
