Lauren Gazzola SHAC 7 defendant Lauren Gazzola was a lead organizer in one of the most successful -- and controversial -- animal rights campaigns in U.S. history: Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty. The campaign, against a laboratory whose employees had been caught punching beagle puppies in the face and vivisecting live monkeys, mobilized thousands of activists all over the country, in places as unexpected as Little Rock, Arkansas, and made huge waves in both local and national media. Lauren will share lessons learned from the campaign, assess the state of the animal rights movement today, and offer suggestions for a path forward. Lauren holds a B.A. magna cum laude from New York University. In addition to extensive animal rights advocacy, Lauren has a long history of social justice activism and volunteer work. Among other efforts, she has volunteered at the California Anti-SLAPP Project, as a literacy tutor at New York City’s Grand Street Settlement, and with a youth HIV/AIDS awareness and community outreach group. She has worked for a diversity consultant, as an educator in New York City public schools, and as an assistant to artist Spencer Tunick. She currently works in the Communications Department at the Center for Constitutional Rights, where she is also a plaintiff in CCR’s lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act. Kenneth G. Williams Vegan bodybuilder Kenneth G. Williams will speak about activism in your own way and he will be honored with an award for his long-time animal rights activism.
