While Tinder is designed to offer random matches (in every sense), the League aims to create a more highly selective community. This is achieved, in part, by mining users’ LinkedIn accounts to create professional and educational affinities while also weeding out immediate colleagues. This braiding of professional and personal has irked some. Bloomberg Businessweek struck a critical tone before the app was even introduced, calling it “elitist”; The Huffington Post was even harsher: “this world just doesn’t have enough dating apps — or elitism — already.” Ms. Bradford understands the criticism, but thinks her users see the so-called “elitism” of the League as a selling point. “It isn’t an app for everybody,” she said. “We’re trying to hit home that these people do have high standards. They’re not accepting everybody.”
