While butterflies pupate all that is left whole of the original caterpillar is small clumps of cells called gene plates (not the brain), the rest simply an organic soup. Did you know its possible for the growing butterfly to split in two in that early soupy stage, like how twins form in the womb, resulting in two miniature butterflies emerging from the same chrysalis??? Both would retain whatever the original caterpillar had learned, and both would be the same organism as that original caterpillar. Weird *_* Came across that little bit of info while reading today.
