Why I Resigned — Jonathan’s Aide Abubakar Salihi — February 8, 2014 Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Gas to Power project and member in the technical committee of SURE-P, Engr Muazu Magaji said he resigned his position on the ground that the body language of the Federal Government requires people like him from the ‘opposition states’ to vacate position. “Because of the political disharmony between my State Governor (Kano) and the Presidency, I was indirectly shown the way out,” he assumed. In an exclusive interview with our reporter, he explained what went wrong with SURE- P that while the technical committee on SURE-P was designing palliative projects, a separate document was submitted from the office of the Vice President listing road projects and other requirements that are contrary to the policy strategy of subsidy reinvestment. According to him the technical committee tried to explain the meaning of palliative measures which is the policy strategy of SURE-P aimed at bringing quick relief to Nigerians for directly removing subsidy from them but dishonesty on the part of Presidency was eminent. What really tilted SURE-P focus, Engr Muazu noted was that the Vice President’s document was in favour of infrastructure such as road projects among others that are of course a long term project and quite a number of Federal Ministries are executing such already, arguing that it was diversionary and not palliative. “From that moment, I was worried and believed that SURE-P’s goal was skewed,” he averred. In his assessment, SURE-P did not achieve up to 25 per cent of what it sets to achieve due to what he described as a swing in the policy strategy and lack of political will on the part of the Jonathan’s administration.
