#Why We Visited Ex-Presidents - 5 Northern Govs. •Visit Shagari# Group of five governors, who are of the ruling PDP, on Tuesday, said the purpose of their visit to former presidents and heads of states was to seek fatherly advice from them on the way out of the problems of insecurity and poverty currently plaguing the nation. Their spokesman and Adamawa State governor, Murtala Nyako, disclosed this while fielding reporters’ questions at the Sultan Abubakar (111) International Airport Sokoto, shortly after they held a closed door meeting with Nigeria’s first elected president, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, at his Sama road, Sokoto residence. He said the meeting they had with the former president was mainly as a result of the continued insecurity and poverty ravaging Nigerians. Asked on whether their actions will not be misconstrued by others as an attempt to shield themselves from likely political dangers which lied ahead of them in 2015, Nyako said planning and strategising were part and parcel of politics. Nyako came to Sokoto in a Nana Group Airline, while Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State and Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso of Kano State arrived Sokoto in a chartered Legacy Airline. After their arrival, the governors were conveyed in a Toyota Lexus to the presidential lodge from where their host, Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, drove them in his Ford SUV to the personal residence of the former president along Sama Road. Upon their arrival at his residence by 12 noon, they went straight into his sitting room and started the closed door meeting which lasted for about one hour. When the meeting was over, journalists approached them for questions and they said later at the villa that Wamakko again drove them in the Ford SUV straight to the Sultan Abubakar international airport amid tight security. As soon as they got to the tarmac, pressmen bulldozed their way and attempted to ask them some questions and the governors after a short debate, agreed that Nyako should address the press on the meeting with Shagari. Of the five governors, only Niger State governor, Alhaji Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, was not present at the meeting. However, the PDP North-West Zonal Vice Chairman, Ambassador Ibrahim Kazaure, was with the governors during their visit to the state, which political pundits said was a clear indication that the governors were working out the emergence of one of them as the next president in 2015.
