Why do we have a Supreme Court and a Congress made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate? As a form of checks and balances to prevent the executive branch (the president) from having too much power and becoming a tyrant. Congress creates laws. Not the president. The president may veto a law, which then sends it back to congress to be voted on or rewritten. The supreme court can decide whether or not a law is compliant with the Constitution.
