Wildlife in Need Center to host large sale with owl-themed items By Amber Gramza Freeman Staff SUMMIT – Joe Deloria of Waukesha said his wife, Doreen, could have been considered an owl nut. The couple was married for 26 years, in which time she collected many treasured owl-themed items. “She had everything from plates, to dishes, to pictures, to jewelry, to snow globes – we even had owl bedding and God there was just anything,” Deloria said. Doreen Deloria, who died March 4, 2010, of lung cancer when she was 58, was known to be an avid owl collector and enjoyed spending time at her cottage in Elcho with her husband, according to her obituary. Joe Deloria said he keeps her ashes in a small silver owl that he keeps in a pouch so he can carry her with him always. pouch so he can carry her with him always. The Wildlife in Need Center announced its summer meet-and greet and everything owl sale from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday, July 13. This sale is in memory of Doreen Deloria; hundreds of items were donated to the WINC by Joe Deloria. Lisa Rowe of the WINC said Joe Deloria called the center not too long ago and asked if the center’s staff could make use of the donations. “He just wanted to donate it to somewhere so it could help owls, and we are glad to do that,” Rowe said. The meet-and-greet is an opportunity to meet the center’s educational animals like Dakota, the great horned owl, and Waldo, the woodchuck, as well as other animals. “(Doreen) met Dakota years ago downtown and got pictures of him and I went to the center and it was just ironic that I had my own private greeting with Dakota when a woman was walking him in,” Joe Deloria said. Owl items ranging in price from 25 cents to $35 will be on sale. People attending the event can also buy raffle tickets at $15 apiece for a chance to win a framed print of Dakota by local artist Elaine Konitzer. The raffle drawing will be held at the WINC’s Fine Wine and Dine at 7 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Elm Grove Women’s Club, 13885 Watertown Plank Road. There are only 100 raffle tickets available. All proceeds from the owl sale and raffle will be used to help support the Wildlife in Need Center. This event is free and open to the public. The Wildlife in Need Center is located at W349-S1480 S.
