Wine is a work of art and this Wine Wednesday feature, the South African wine, Protea Chenin Blanc, takes it to new levels. protea wines usa beautifully designed bottles feature the art of fashion designer Mark Eisen. You may remember in the past I featured the Protea Red. Recently, Protea Wines was having a Pinterest sweepstakes wherein winners were given a lovely Jono Pandolfi Designs ceramic wine coaster – guess who won? l appreciate a wine coaster, especially when enjoying red wine. Often times after pouring there can be little drips that will run down the side of the bottle and if you’re not careful they can stain your counter or linens – well not anymore since I have my new wine coaster. It sort of remains on my counter and when not used as a wine coaster it’s handy to hold my rings when I’m cooking or doing dishes. Because Ive featured the red blend before, this time I wanted to try the Chenin Blanc. Here’s a little trivia, Chenin Blanc is a half-sibling to Sauvignon Blanc. They both share a parent grape in Savagnin. There are similarities but yet distinct differences. If you like one, you may wish to try the other. Chenin Blanc is the most widely planted variety in South Africa. It is also the same varietal labeled as Vouvray, a French region in the Loire valley where it is also widely grown. The latter tend to be the Chenin Blancs I’m most familiar with. This wine was a different yet delightful expression of the varietal. On the nose hints of orange blossom and pear. I found it to have a smooth mouth feel different from the Vouvray I’m accustomed to, but enjoyable in that it still had the crisp finish Ive come to expect with balanced acidity. We enjoyed this with a shrimp salad, but I also think it would be great with my Pea Soup or Salpicao (Brazilian Chicken Salad).
