Wisconsin residents who hold a commercial drivers license risk - TopicsExpress

Wisconsin residents who hold a commercial drivers license risk losing it unless they comply with a new federal law and provide required information to the Wisconsin DMV. By January 30 of next year, those holding a CDL need to inform the DMV of two things: Whether they operate interstate or intrastate; and whether they are required to carry a Medical Examiner Certificate. If they do carry a “Fed Med” card, they’re required to provide the DMV a current copy. There are some 200-thousand Wisconsin residents who hold a CDL. About half have not yet provided the federally-required information. The fastest and easiest way for commercial drivers to meet the new reporting requirement is to use the official DMV web site (wisconsindmv.gov). (Alison Lebwohl, 608/266-0054) *** Mopeds and scooters are increasingly common especially around college campuses. But what’s needed to legally operate one in Wisconsin? Mopeds have engines of not more than 50 cc’s – a top speed of about 30 mph and can transport just one person – the driver. Moped operators must hold a valid regular driver’s license. Scooters are considered “step-through” motorcycles – have engines over 50 cc’s and operators must have a driver’s license specifically endorsed for motorcycle operation. Mopeds and scooters must be registered like other motor vehicles. (Greg Patzer, 608/266-7855) More than $9.5 million in awards have been announced through a new freight program. Surface Transportation Program – Freight (STP – Freight) was created following the Governor’s Freight Summit last year. STP – Freight is a two year pilot program funded by federal dollars. Seven awards will benefit freight-related improvement projects in the cities of Baraboo and Milwaukee and Chippewa, La Crosse and Milwaukee counties. Award criteria includes: Projects associated with multimodal and intermodal facilities or warehousing and distribution centers; projects that provide local freight connections to the state highway network; or projects offering many-to-one and one-to-many connections.
