Wisconsin will be the sixth state in which the company operates. Its a big deal for us. Weve been in the five (states) for, what, 20 years now, said Hank Meijer, third-generation family co-owner, co-chairman and CEO of the 213-store chain. Its been a long time since weve opened up a new frontier for our company. Meijer operates stores in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois and Kentucky. It employs 60,000 people. To establish itself in Wisconsin, the company is investing $750 million and adding 7,000 jobs, said J.K. Symancyk, president of Meijer. The first thing the company did to carry out its Wisconsin plan was open a distribution facility in Pleasant Prairie in Kenosha County. Prior to Wisconsin, Meijer had always expanded where the geography made sense or where it could move into locations other retailers had abandoned — as long as it had a distribution network in place to supply its stores. So setting up shop in Wisconsin, where it initially had no such infrastructure in place, has been a new experience for the 80-year-old company.
