With all the complaints about an increase in cosplayers at MAGFest, I feel obligated to say what I think of all this. If you have more people cosplaying because theyre passionate about the character theyre taking on, they want to use it as a springboard for interacting with others, or they just want to contribute the overall atmosphere, theres nothing really wrong with that. They just want to have fun. However, you also have people who are trying to develop a cosplaying career for themselves. People like this dont exactly have the best track record for being good role models. Some people who have hit it big in this field (or are trying to) are jerks. They might be rude or condescending to fans and other con-goers, go to ridiculous extremes to get attention, or get other people to fund their endeavors, no matter how unneeded they may be. (For example, Ive seen several GoFundMe campaigns for these aspiring cosplayers to get breast enlargements, even though they may already have done this and/or already have D-cups.) These are just opposite extremes. You do have people who lie somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. Now, heres the key question. Based on the nature of MAGFest, which end of the spectrum does MAGFest better suit? I would definitely say the former end. Think about it. MAGFest doesnt have any official photo shoots on its schedule, but many other cons do. MAGFest doesnt really hold any real skill-based cosplay contests, but many other cons do. The closest thing we have is the cosplay roast, which largely consists of participants getting drunk and poking fun at each other (all in good fun, though; not maliciously). In other words, its not a super-serious contest. People who want to be taken seriously in the cosplay world arent going to get much in terms of achieving this goal by going to MAGFest. There are plenty of other events they can go to where they can get noticed. Yes, theyll get complimented on their great work, but itll be more of a passive thing. In short, I think the kinds of cosplayers that people here might be worried about wouldnt thrive as well in a MAGFest environment as they would at some other venue. If this is the case, that could affect their decision to come back next year. My two cents on the matter.
